Ticket machines blown up

LEWES Bombers caused £300,000 damage by blowing up dozens of parking ticket machines. The latest attacks in Lewes, East Sussex, destroyed three machines and police last night offered a £3,000 reward to catch the culprits.

The bombers are stuffing industrial-sized fireworks — possibly rook scarers used by farmers — inside the machines in car parks.

The explosions have been occurring for two years and emergency services are worried that shrapnel will injure or even kill the culprits as well as passers-by.

Chief Inspector Neil Moscrop, of Lewes police, said: “This is a criminal act and someone could get seriously injured.”

Matthew Lock, the council transport spokesman, said “As well risking to life and limb, it is the people of Lewes who suffer the financial consequences of this mindless vandalism. So far it has cost £300,000”.
