Tiago

Tiago was one of Jose Mourinho’s first signings at Chelsea in July 2004 for a fee of around £8 million from Benfica. He linked up with fellow Portuguese internationals Ferreira and Carvalho at Stamford Bridge, and all three players have broken the tradition of Portuguese players not settling in England by adapting well to the Premiership. Tiago chose Chelsea, having been linked to a host of Europe’s top sides, notably Barcelona and Juventus. The Portuguese international has been in and out of the team since his arrival, but has provided good cover when he is needed. An attacking midfield player, Tiago provides good support to the forwards and ended the 2004-05 season with a memorable 30-yard strike at Old Trafford.- Barney Henderson
