Three men have been arrested over the hit-and-run death of an 11-year-old boy as he left evening prayers at a mosque near Manchester.

Two men, including a 19-year-old, handed themselves in to Greater Manchester police after the collision in Ashton-under-Lyne. A third man was arrested.

All three are being questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and one is also suspected of driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

The schoolboy, who has not yet been named, was struck by a car as he left the Mosque Hamza after attending evening prayers with his father at about 4.45pm on Monday.

Witnesses rushed to help but the boy died shortly afterwards in hospital.

Local residents described the child as a “lovely bubbly boy” to the Manchester Evening News.

Shayful Islam, the imam at Mosque Hamza, told the newspaper that the “whole community is in shock and praying for the family”.

He said the boy “quite happily came out of the mosque” before he was hit by a car “driving at a really fast speed”.

Police said the car, believed to be a dark grey or black Mercedes A or B class, did not stop at the scene of the accident in Moss Street West.

Sergeant Paul Higgins, of the serious collision investigation unit, had appealed for help tracing the car involved, which he said would have damage to its front headlight.

“A child has tragically been killed in a collision and we are doing all we can to trace the driver of the vehicle,” he said.

“While we are in the early stages of our investigation we believe the car involved is a dark grey or black Mercedes A or B class and it will have damage to the front nearside headlight.

“We would ask if anyone saw the vehicle around the time of the collision, or has seen it since, that they contact us.

“It may be the vehicle has been parked up and left somewhere nearby so I would ask people living in the area to check outside their house and call us if they see a vehicle matching the description.”
