Competitors will race over land and sea on horses, above, bicycles and kayaks at The Ride and Tidex Equestrian Festival in Westport, in Co Mayo on Saturday. This unique event challenges teams of two against the clock over a two-hour course, from sandy beaches to nearby islands and back. Numbers are limited and the race is not recommended for absolute beginners, but it should make for spectacular viewing.

Martin McCann, left, of Killing Bono fame, is set to appear at the inaugural Fingal Film Festival which runs in Dublin’s Blanchardstown from Wednesday to Friday. The three-day event includes screenings of This Must Be the Place, a locally filmed Sean Penn movie, and an acting class with McCann on Wednesday.

Participants must spot specially hidden leprechauns near the foot of Slieve Foy mountain, the “last known leprechaun habitat”.
