These New Puritans: Hidden

The second album by the youthful Southend-on-Sea quartet is astonishing, brave and very peculiar. They mix clattering, brutal dancehall beats with digital bleeps and the recurring motif of a mournful brass and woodwind section. The epic We Want War recalls the edgy paranoia of Mezzanine-era Massive Attack, while Orion suggests a 25th-century civilisation who found a Specials album in a time capsule and used it as the blueprint for all music. There are more ideas here than most bands manage in an entire career.
