Gerry Newman (Liam Carney), once a political fixer who greased the palms that built sink-hole Dublin housing estates, breaks his self-imposed exile to return fleetingly to Ireland. Ignoring warnings not to leave the airport, Newman ventures into the bright new Ireland he believes he has single-handedly created, only to discover he is a villain rather than the hero of his myth. Paul Mercier is author and director of a vibrant update of the story of Oisin and Tir na nOg. An ultra-theatrical experience, it blends a stylised set with imaginative choreography and satirical dialogue to reflect a modern Ireland that is both sordid and shimmering. Carney is a charismatic anti-hero, while David Pearse shines among a strong ensemble cast. Repeated riffing on the Oisin myth detracts from the piece, as does an extended coda that confirms Newman’s absolution but feels crudely grafted on to an otherwise playful meta-narrative.
