The Santa Clause 3

Director: Michael Lembeck, U, 98min

Stars: Tim Allen, Martin Short, Elizabeth Mitchell, Alan Arkin

On general release

Allen looks bored in his third outing as the ordinary guy who morphed into Santa after accidentally killing the big red fellow in the original 1994 film. This time he disguises the North Pole as a Canadian town so that his in-laws can visit their pregnant daughter, and faces a hyperactive Short as Jack Frost.

Imagine a cross between Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and It’s a Wonderful Life without the invention and warmth. Younger children might like the constant action and the fact that the North Pole is a playground of toys and sweets. But the film strains any good cheer with hammy acting and trite sentimentality.
