Sir, Michael Freedland (letter, Sept 5) states with well-founded indignation that as a result of McCarthyism people committed suicide, and nine writers were jailed. Meanwhile, at the same time in the USSR hundreds of people were executed, mainly Lithuanian and Ukrainian democrats. Millions were languishing in 150 concentration camps. Half of them died of hard labour. Western media did not report about those atrocities.
