The Naked and Famous: Passive Me, Aggressive You

This Kiwi export is to start making waves in the UK, but its debut album is overproduced and overwrought

Pop music in New Zealand is going through a purple patch, and the Naked and Famous are the latest Kiwi export to start making waves in the UK. This debut album of luminous synth-pop topped the charts in their native land, and the anthemic Young Blood, with its delirious, fist-pumping melodies, could be a hit single in any country. But the album as a whole is overproduced and overwrought, with only the sparse melancholy of The Sun (Massive Attack meets the xx) offering a break from the bluster. (Polydor Records; out Mon)
