The Merry Gentleman

The directorial debut of Michael Keaton never quite convinces as anything other than a puff-piece for the Batman star

The Merry Gentleman is the directorial debut of the character actor, comedy performer and occasional Batman, Michael Keaton. In the context of Hollywood vanity, it is thus unsurprising to witness how Keaton directs himself as a mysterious yet handsome hitman called Frank Logan, who is mysterious enough to lure pretty-faced Kelly Macdonald into his fascinating life. The film never quite convinces as anything other than a puff-piece for Keaton, but it is bolstered by another deeply empathetic turn from Macdonald, who previously provided the warm heart to No Country for Old Men.
