The meaning of (college) life

WHY do we exist? The question that troubles most of us at some point is particularly pertinent for the further education (FE) sector.

Sir Andrew Foster, the former Audit Commission head and the man charged with reviewing the future of FE, is asking deep, searching questions of the sector in an attempt to clarify just what FE is all about, reports The Times Educational Supplement (June 24). Sir Andrew is concerned that the sector is “too vague and ill-defined”, says the journal. This has led to funding problems and an often poor media image.

He has ten key questions that the sector must answer by the end of October, when his report is due. On the list are questions such as: “What is the main purpose of FE colleges?” and “How do we develop sector and college leadership?”
