The kit

Everything you need for a little personal protection

Braun PocketGo 570 shaver, £14.99

www.braun.com

The good: Compact and easily operated on the run. Uses AA batteries.

The bad: Good for sudden sproutings, but no substitute for razor. No mains adapter.

Verdict: Great for sprucing up before a dinner date. A stylish steal at the price. If only it was rechargeable.

Philips QC5170 DIY hair clippers, £50

www.philips.co.uk

The good: Rotating head, cordless, easy to use.

The bad: The numbering isn’t the same as a barber’s: a No 1 will leave you looking like Duncan Goodhew.

Verdict: Rotating head is gimmicky, but makes the job easier. Caution over length.

Oral-B Triumph Professional Care 9500DLX set, £165

www.oralb.com

The good: Rechargeable, brushing style settings, timer so you know when to stop.

The bad: Expensive, vibrates so much that frothy spittle runs down your arm.

Verdict: With four brushing modes (clean/massage/soft/ polish), a rechargeable battery with LCD power display and a timer that tells you when to move on to the next quadrant in your mouth, this is not a toothbrush for the casual brusher. Used daily, however, it should give you a smile to be proud of.
