A DAB hand at the radio

All those 20th-century obituaries for the radio were premature. Digital audio broadcasting has made radio hot. But which DAB radio should you buy?

Pure Evoke-3, £199

The good: Allows you to pause live radio, record to an SD memory card, has an alarm clock, 99 presets and an electronic programme guide. Build quality is great.

The bad: No USB cable provided for the USB software update feature.

Overall: This set, on sale in two weeks’ time, is the bee’s knees of digital radio. If you want a top of the range radio, look no further. 5/5

Roberts Sound 39, £120

The good: Pause live radio, alarm clock.

The bad: Dials and unit feel plasticky.

Overall: The live pause feature is good but harder to use than the Evoke-3’s.

We expected a better finish. 3/5

Denon RCD-M35DAB, £380

The good: Superior sound, built-in CD player and can be incorporated into a larger hi-fi system.

The bad: Price, if all you want is a radio.

Overall: Sounds great, and is versatile, but we suspect most people will be happy with the cheaper Evoke-3. 4/5
