The Insider February 2

Goldenballs, heart of gold

Let’s give that nice David Beckham a break. So he did not turn up to host the London charity bash for cystic fibrosis sufferers arranged on Thursday night by Thierry Henry. But then Henry did not turn up either, citing commitments to Barcelona, who had a fixture change – not that different from Beckham, who was recalled by Los Angeles Galaxy for preseason training. But Goldenballs can still claim that another part of his anatomy glistens, too, as proved by a story told to The Insider yesterday.

Apparently, Beckham, with Victoria, his wife, splashed out £3,000 to buy a frame to help a severely disabled girl to walk for the first time. The Beckhams heard about the plight of Vanessa Sauvary, who is 12 and suffers from cerebral palsy, because she lives in Bishop’s Stortford, down the road in Hertfordshire from Beckingham Palace in Sawbridgeworth.

Vanessa’s mother and father, Kelvyn and Cheryl, were overwhelmed. “When I got the phone call from the supplier asking when we’d like it delivered, I was gobsmacked,” Cheryl said. “It has made our year.” Not all bad, you see.

Charitable Hamilton

Beckham is not alone in not turning up. Lewis Hamilton, fresh from his first year in Formula One, was unavailable to collect the Sportsman of the Year award voted for by readers of his local newspaper in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. Perhaps he was too busy with Naomi Campbell, the supermodel who has interviewed him for GQ magazine. Hamilton told her of his caring side, for he has set up a charity, the Lewis Hamilton Foundation. Hamilton, who is expected to earn about £14 million a year, said: “I have made lots of money and I can put it to good use.” Well done that man.

Pop star causing a song and dance

The swanky Henry party at the Dorchester Hotel in Central London attracted its usual bevy of WAGs, but we bet few of them have caused the same sort of havoc as one Jessica Simpson, a blonde warbler cut from the same mould as Britney Spears. Only without the success.

Simpson took a shine a while ago to Tony Romo, the Dallas Cowboys quarterback. An unfortunate side-effect of their dalliance was a sharp downturn in Romo’s form, culminating in the Cowboys’ play-offs defeat by the New York Giants. Cowboys fans watching the Super Bowl tomorrow night just will not forgive the little popster.
