The Fratellis

Costello Music

(Island)

The Glaswegian trio the Fratellis are the opposite of Franz Ferdinand. A rebuttal of art school cool, their lairy glamrock throws off the genre’s tendency towards effeminacy and kitsch by reducing it to its core of stomping rhythms, chunky riffs and terrace choruses.

The festival-friendly songs on their debut are populated with colourful tales taken from the low-rent world that they pretend to inhabit. The cartoonish mood is ably supported by some immensely catchy songs — notably Everybody Knows

You Cried Last Night, Old Black and Blue Eyes and the rousing Got My Nuts from a Hippy — that make you feel as though you have stumbled on the best night out ever.
