The facts of life

Sir, In 1963 I was aged 10 and in my first year at boarding school. On the last day of the summer term we were ushered into the common room where the housemaster explained the arrangements for the following day, such as when we would be met by our parents and various other administrative matters. To our surprise and his intense embarrassment he then launched himself into a lecture which he termed “The facts of life” (letter, Nov 10).

When he had finished he asked for questions. After an awkward silence, one boy put his hand up. His question was: “What time did you say the swimming pool would stay open to tomorrow?” That was the end of sex education at my school.
