The Duke Spirit: Neptune

The new singer Duffy may impress, both for recovering from second place in the Welsh X Factor and for getting nearly everything right in the vocal department. But enough of this "new Dusty" nonsense, please. If anyone is picking up the Springfield torch and running with it, it's Leila Moss, of the Duke Spirit, who understands (as so few of her rivals do) that it was the soul - as much, if not more than the soul music - that made Dusty great. Thus, Moss cops a burst of her band's towering wall of sound, combining punked-up rhythm and blues, Stax and pastoralia, and, on songs such as The Step and the Walk, and My Sunken Treasure, lets rip without missing a beat. Great singer, great band, great album.
