Bored with conventional shoot-'em-ups in which the aim is mainly to manoeuvre a character into position, then shoot straight? If so you'll find that The Club is a breath of fresh air. You control one of eight playable characters in a fight to the death where you will come up against thrill-seekers, cops and other misfit hardnuts. This innovative title is from the team behind Project Gotham Racing, and, as with the classic driving series, victory in The Club comes from playing the game with style rather than from achieving specific goals. The aim is to look good as you dispatch your enemies with slick shots while rolling acrobatically beneath a shotgun's blast. There are many challenges, played out through interesting settings such as English mansions, abandoned prisons and the back alleys of Venice. Above the basic difficulty level it's fiendishly tricky, but the game is ideal for those willing to invest time in topping the online leader boards. The graphics are good rather than brilliant, but The Club is not about spectacle - it's all about action.
