Risers

Zach Johnson (US)
Started day: +5; ended day: +1
After scoring a five-over-par 75 in the first round, Zach Johnson went straight to the driving range to take out his anger, and it certainly improved something. The 2015 Open Champion sank five birdies on his way to scoring a sublime 66 in the second round. When Johnson finished his second round he rose the highest on the leaderboard at the Open, having started the day tied in 121st then rising 91 places to tied 30th.Perhaps hitting a few more balls on the range will set him up nicely for the third round.

Rory McIlroy (N IRE)
Started day: +1; ended day: -1
McIlroy left his volatile form behind him and brought himself back into contention with a strong second round after a disastrous start to the Open. McIlroy, who is looking for his first major win in four years, has a calamitous start and finished one over par in the first round after five bogies in on the front nine put his chances of victory in doubt. The Northern Irishman started the day tied in 58th place but an improved second round where he finished one under par saw him rise to tied 12 after scoring 68.

Richie Ramsey (SCOT)
Started day: -2; Ended day: -2
Richie Ramsey, who made the cut in a major for only time at the Open in 2013, kept his two under par score unscathed by making par in the second round. The 169th ranked player remains amongst the top players on the leaderboard after scoring one bogey, one birdie and the rest par in his second round during testing weather conditions.

Martin Laird (SCOT)
Started day: -2; Ended day: +7
The Scotsman got off to a flying start in Thursday’s first round and finished on minus two and tied in fourth place. In the second round Laird got five bogies and two double-bogies which meant he dropped to 126th at the end of his disastrous round.

Adam Hadwin (CAN)
Started day: +2; Ended day: +13
Adam Hadwin finished the first round one over par, which is a respectable score for a player ranked 54th and just one PGA Tour win. What wasn’t respectable was the Canadian’s back nine in the second round. Hadwin hit three pars, three bogies and three triple-bogies to finish on 12 over for day: talk about a bad round of golf.

Yusaku Miyazato (JAPAN)
Started day: Evens; Ended day: +12
Yusaku Miyazato would have been fairly pleased with his 70 score in the first round as he looked to make the cut for the first time at the Open having missed out in 2014 and 2016. The world number 126, and brother of former women’s number one Ai Miyazato, went from back-to-back birdies on the first day to back-to-back bogies on his way to scoring 82 in the second round.
