What’s your bedtime ritual? Mug of sleepy tea or cocoa? Buttoned-down PJs and a sleep mask? A spritz of lavender while you listen to a bedtime story read by Matthew McConaughey on the Calm app? If any of these are part of your ritual, I’m sure you’re also a sucker for crisp white sheets. The ultimate element to help you achieve that hotel room luxury at home.

As expected, Chrissie Rucker, the founder of The White Company, is a big fan: “I love the perfect simplicity and versatility of white. It’s classic yet modern and, just like a little black dress, it’s wonderfully timeless too.” And like an LBD it’s versatile. “It’s great for any season and any style of bedroom. One of my favourite ways to layer a bed for colder weather is add a cable-knit throw and plump cushions,” she adds.

The colour may be simple but the material choice is vast. For white cotton sheets you’ll need to decide on thread count. “We believe the best thread count should be between 200 and 600 — anything below 200 will feel rougher and you will be able to see the weave in the fabric,” Molly Freshwater from Secret Linen Store says. You should also consider a bedsheet with a higher thread count than your duvet cover because generally it will endure more wear and tear.

For those wanting a pamper while they snooze, silk sheets have health and beauty benefits. “They have a high protein content, which will keep your hair smooth and your skin soft as you sleep — making it the ideal choice for overall wellbeing and particularly for anyone with allergies or skin conditions such as eczema,” Deborah Fiddy, a co-founder of Gingerlily, says.

Note to self: to ensure your sheets stay white, please resist Marmite on toast and tea in bed...
