Q. My wife and I want to take the car across to Denmark. Is the only direct crossing from Harwich, and can you advise on the differences between cabin types?
Trevor Adams, York
Sunday Times Travel Doctor: The only ferry company with services from the UK to Denmark is DFDS Seaways (0871 882 0885, dfds.co.uk), from Harwich. The crossing takes 17 hours and there is a sailing every other day in each direction. Air fares generally more than double when you move from economy to business, and again between business and first, but on a ferry you get a lot more for a relatively small price difference.
On DFDS, a winter return for two people and car starts at £464 in standard class. Cabins are clean and tidy, with two single beds, a WC, a shower and an outside view. Upgrade into Serena class and you are looking at £544 — cabins are larger, with TV, bathroom, minibar and complimentary video screenings. A buffet breakfast is included.
The top-notch cabins are called Commodore De Luxe and start at £684 return. The rooms are about three times larger than in Serena class, with wooden furniture, a spacious seating area, large window and a good-sized bathroom.

The Commodore area of the ship includes a private lounge and a library, with rear-facing panoramic windows, dedicated crew members and free drinks and snacks. The price includes buffet breakfast in the main restaurant or continental breakfast in the lounge area, or delivered to the cabin.
