The Aristocrats

Director: Paul Provenza, 18, 2005

Stars: Penn Jillette, Robin Williams, Chris Rock, Whoopi Goldberg, Eric Idle, Billy Connolly, Eddie Izzard

Out to buy on DVD

Featuring a stellar cast of comedians, all telling variations on the same filthy music-hall joke, The Aristocrats may sound like a self-indulgent exercise on paper. On screen it certainly contains both high and low points, but anyone who appreciates the mastery of tone and timing that lies behind great foul-mouthed improvisation will savour the ripe imaginative excesses of Goldberg, Izzard, Connolly and the South Park crew.

Behind all the celebrity back-slapping lies a fascinating debate about the true nature of obscenity in a society that shrugs off cinematic ultraviolence but still finds bawdy sexual banter and “bad language” offensive.
