THE CLASSIC APP YOU LOVE

Thanks for updating your Classic app

The Times

Thank you for updating to the new Classic app. We hope you enjoy some of the improvements we have made, and appreciate your patience as we work through some of the issues you have raised.

Despite rigorous testing there are always difficulties that arise when new software is released to tens of thousands of users. As different platforms, stores and devices all behave differently there are some technical problems that have only become apparent now that we are live. Please be assured we are working to resolve these.

Latest news

IOS

We are now testing a new build (7.2.2) which supports background refresh and we plan to release this later next week. This allows the app to download the edition early in the morning (assuming it has enough battery and connectivity) and means the edition will already be downloaded when you foreground the app first thing each day.

This build will also disable the double-tap accessibility feature which zooms in on the page as this has caused some frustration. This feature will be disabled by default but can be re-enabled via the settings menu.

Android and Amazon Kindle Fire

An updated version (v7.2.5) is being released in phases over the next week. This contains various fixes and enhancements to improve your experience including resolving some memory issues that were causing blank screens

Issues we still are working on

Frequent logins

We have had a number of complaints from users having to log in each day as they read the edition. We believe we have found the cause of this issue and aim to have a fix available next week.

Offline reading
We have had some users complain about not being able to read offline. We haven’t been able to recreate this and are not at present able to ascertain if this relates to the login issue. We think it may be the adhoc login which doesn’t work offline and is then blocking users from reading the editions they have downloaded. We are doing more testing around this to try to find a solution so again please bear with us.

For both the above issues, if you could contact us at apps@thetimes.co.uk we’d be keen to get more examples of when the login appears and how the offline reading issue manifests itself . If you can provide your device and OS information in the body of the email and put “Login/ Offline” in the subject that would be really helpful. Many thanks.

Performance and storage
We are working on a background refresh feature that will allow the app to download your daily edition in the background overnight. Please bear with us while we get this live.

In the meantime, the v7.2.0 release also allows iOS users to choose to revert to standard-resolution images rather than the default high-resolution images we have now. This should improve edition download speed, app performance and the amount of storage used, especially on older or less powerful devices. To do this go to settings and click data management. Android and Kindle users already default to standard images but can choose to use the higher-resolution version by selecting that option in settings.

We also have a housekeeping setting under data management that deletes older editions to prevent storage becoming full over time. This is set to seven days by default, but you can extend or shorten this time period.

Zoomed views
iOS users may accidentally double-tap the screen, which triggers an accessibility feature to zoom in on the page. This can be reset by double-tapping again but in the future we hope to be able to allow users to disable this feature.

Duplicate articles
We republish certain articles if we feel they warrant more exposure or if they have been updated, so you may notice this from edition to edition. We are working to limit any duplicates that do appear and this change will be deployed over the next few weeks.

Android and Kindle Fire users

Blank pages, offline error messages appearing and article swipe issues
We are looking into all these issues as a priority and will be releasing builds regularly until they are resolved.

Saved images
Apologies, we have not been able to migrate your saved articles to the new app. Any articles you retained by saving them on the website or Live app will not appear on the new app immediately, but we are working on syncing them within the next few weeks. Articles you save in the app now should be retained going forward unless you delete and reinstall the app.

Font size and white space
We understand that there is considerable frustration when using devices in landscape mode, especially when they are on smaller, letterbox-shaped devices. We are scaling our templates to fit the space but have found an issue with the software that results in too much white space being displayed. This scaling down to fit the space also means the fonts are smaller than intended. Both of these issues will be fixed in an upcoming build. In the meantime, the best solution is to use your device in portrait mode, where the template scaling and font sizes should work as expected.

Codeword and Lexica
We know that there are issues playing the Codeword and Lexica on some Androind and Kindle devices. We are working on fixing this. In the short term, you can play these puzzles by holding a thumb in the corner of the screen while you move the tiles, in order to stop the screen swiping. We apologise for the inconvenience.

Answering your questions
Our welcome video gives an overview of some of the changes to the Classic app here. If you would like to access this again later it can be found in the app under Settings, Help.

We have some useful FAQ pages that give an overview of the update and explain some of the differences between the old and new apps, such as the way we now handle editions and their supplements together, rather than as separate sections to be downloaded and deleted individually. Rose Wild also discusses our decision to change the edition menu order in her Feedback column.

Many of you have contacted us about the changes to our puzzles. This FAQ page details these changes, along with our rationale. These changes come after extensive user research led us to standardise the gameplay across our products, but we appreciate it may take some time to get used to.

Feedback
If you are experiencing issues, first ensure you have the latest operating system for your device and the latest version of the new Classic app, as we are making updates in response to user feedback.

If you still need help, email us at apps@thetimes.co.uk and include any screenshots or videos of the issues you face, as well as the type of device you are using, the operating system you are on and the app version you currently have downloaded. This information will be filled in automatically if you email us using the button in the app under Settings, Contact Us.

Once again, thank you for your patience while we work to give you the Classic app you love.
