Testing times for opener

Nov 12-16, 2005: After consulting his wife, Marcus Trescothick agrees to captain England in place of the injured Michael Vaughan. Makes a brilliant 193 in first Test against Pakistan in Multan. “That was probably my best innings,” he said.

Nov 17: Announces that he will stay in Pakistan despite father-in-law being taken to hospital with serious injuries after falling off a ladder. “The past few days have been very traumatic for my family,” he said. “Having talked with my family and the England captain and coach, I’ve decided to remain with the squad.”

Dec 10-21: Scores 75 runs in five innings in one-day series against Pakistan.

Feb 25, 2006: Three days before first Test against India, Trescothick flies home, having reportedly left a warm-up match in Vadodara in tears. “Family and personal reasons” are offered as explanation for his departure. Was expected to return to tour, but never did.

April 10: Speaks for first time about his problems, on Sky Sports. Blames unidentified virus and fatigue of cricketing life for his departure. “The main reason was I picked up a bug in Bombay and it really hit me hard,” he said.

May 11: In first innings back in England side, hits 106 in first npower Test against Sri Lanka at Lord’s.

May-Sept: In 11 Test innings since, has made one half-century, scoring 217 runs at an average of 19.7. In eight one-day internationals against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, has made 299 runs at 37.37, including one century and one half-century.
