Taste test... korma sauces

Look out for: a light colouring, smooth consistency and a flavour that’s not just sugar and cream.

Guest panellist: Cyrus Todiwala, owner of Café Spice Namasté

Sharwood’s Korma, 420g, £1.39

The coconut hasn’t been fully blended so you have to chew a bit, but there’s a rounded flavour and a dash of tomato.

Pataks’s Korma, 540g, £1.52

There’s a gluteny gloss to it, but in terms of what the public probably expect from a korma, this isn’t too disappointing.

Asda Korma Sauce, 570g, 85p

Nice colour and texture, but tastes of undercooked onion and chemical stabilisers.

Uncle Ben’s Korma, 490g, £1.43

If he were my uncle, I wouldn’t go round to his house for a korma. This tastes just like a sweet and sour sauce.

Sainsbury’s Korma Cooking Sauce, 500g, 79p

This could almost be Bisto… but Bisto isn’t loaded with raw spices that coat the back of your throat. Disgusting.

Loyd Grossman Korma, 425g, £1.99

A disaster – it’s so sweet you could make a dessert sauce from it.
