Talk show king Parkinson to stay at ITV

Talk show veteran Michael Parkinson has signed a deal with ITV to keep him at the channel for another two years.

Parkinson, 70, moved to ITV in 2004 in a shock defection from the BBC.

The new series will kick off in March and will be Parkinson’s fourth for ITV1.

Some of the names lined up for interview include Sharon Stone, Jamie Foxx, Bette Midler and Jane Fonda.

The new contract will keep Parkinson at the channel until at least the end of 2007.

The TV host said: “It was an easy decision. I’ve felt at home here since I first arrived and the show has gone from strength to strength.”

Parkinson quit the BBC after 33 years to join ITV in April 2004, when his show was moved from its 10pm slot to make way for the return of Match of the Day.

ITV guests have included Tom Cruise, Lauren Bacall, John Travolta, Robbie Williams, Sir Paul McCartney, Mariah Carey and Dame Kelly Holmes.

Parkinson has often been derided for giving interviewees an easy ride, but recently took a swipe at his fellow chat show hosts for trying to be “smart arses” and resorting to trivial chit chat.

He famously endured a disastrous interview with Meg Ryan, who refused to answer questions and suggested in mid-conversation that he “close the interview”.

ITV Director of Television Simon Shaps said: “Michael is one of the best-known faces in British television and the undisputed king of the talk show.

“His contribution to our Saturday night line-up is invaluable.

“He is a huge asset to the channel and I’m delighted that he’ll continue to attract the greatest stars in entertainment to join him in ITV’s London Studios.”
