Sir, Russell Vallance mentions that he has seen Scotsmen weep at the sound of Flower of Scotland (letter, Sept 7). It was not until I heard it while walking back from Murryfield, on the Calcutta Cup day last year, that I quite realised its power. As I looked to my left and right not only were the Scotsmen crying tears of joy, but the English were crying tears of sorrow. Maybe that should be a test of your Englishness?
