Summer is ending on a wet whimper

Fold away the deckchairs: the last week of summer will be unsettled (Dan Kitwood)

MONDAY brought a benign start to last week. Things soon got more exciting, however. That night a low pressure system from the North Sea drifted northwest, introducing outbreaks of rain to eastern Scotland and eastern England.

By Wednesday the east-west split had switched and it was in western and central parts of Britain that low pressure edged in from the Atlantic and spread downpours of rain eastward.

Lingering rain over the north and east cleared early on Thursday, so once again it was mainly dry and bright in eastern parts, although a spell of light rain did interrupt play during the first day of the final Ashes Test.

Friday was a grey day for England and Wales, with showers over the north and west; it was rather humid, too, though Scotland and Northern Ireland had fresher conditions. Yesterday was hot and humid for southern and eastern England as southerly winds pulled in warm air from the Continent.

With just over a week left of the meteorological summer and the bank holiday weekend approaching, the unsettled conditions are likely to continue.

Tomorrow will bring further heavy rain, mostly across the north, with showers elsewhere. Low pressure is likely in the west on Tuesday, so spells of rain are expected to move in from the southwest. For the rest of the week expect periods of rain and occasionally strong winds, especially for Scotland. The driest conditions will be in the southeast, but rain is still possible at times.
