A Mack truck said to be the most luxurious ever built — boasting a kitchen, double bed and a solid gold hood ornament — has been handed over to its owner, a Malaysian sultan.

The price tag has not been revealed, but it is believed to be well in excess of the previous record of £310,000 paid for a customised rig. Ibrahim Ismail, the sultan and hereditary ruler of the Malaysian state of Johor, travelled to Brisbane to take ownership. He will use the 685hp lorry to tow his high-speed powerboat after it is shipped to Malaysia at the end of the month.

The Mack Super-Liner was built by the Australian branch of the 115-year-old American truck company, and took a year to complete. Dean Bestwick, the company’s Australia vice-president, said: “The fanciest extra in most Aussie trucks is a microwave or a small fridge. We’d never contemplated the features that have been included in His Majesty’s truck.”

Other features specified by the sultan include a six-camera closed-circuit television system, two TVs, seats with 72,000 stitches of gold thread, a Bose surround-sound system and Xbox and PlayStation consoles. His private car collection includes eight Rolls-Royces.
