An Oxford University official accused of murdering a hair stylist in Chicago is on suicide watch this weekend.

Andrew Warren, 56, surrendered himself to San Francisco police early yesterday after he and another suspect had driven more than 2,000 miles to flee the alleged crime scene, triggering a manhunt.

Warren, a senior treasury assistant at Somerville College — the alma mater of Margaret Thatcher — is expected to be formally charged with first degree murder this week.

His co-accused is Wyndham Lathem, 42, an American associate professor of microbiology and an expert on the bubonic plague.

“We are certainly concerned about their mental state,” said a source close to the investigation.

The men are accused of butchering Trenton Cornell-Duranleau, 26, at a luxury Chicago apartment he shared with Lathem. Parts of the victim’s body had been mutilated.

Police believe Warren may have met Lathem online before he flew to America on July 24 without telling his British boyfriend. Somerville suspended him last Thursday.

Detectives are examining Warren’s use of gay dating sites. On one of these, Grindr, he reportedly said he had “no limits” and wanted to find someone dominant.

Chicago police said: “Both individuals will be held accountable for their actions.”
