Tributes have been paid to an Irish student who died in the US four days after suffering a heart attack while swimming in Maryland.

Friends of Philip Leahy, 22, have raised more than €93,000 to cover medical expenses, which will now be used to repatriate his body and cover funeral expenses.

Mr Leahy was taking an early morning swim with friends in Ocean City last Wednesday when he appeared to struggle and was pulled from the water by rescue workers from the local fire department. He suffered a heart attack as he was being helped on the beach and was taken to Atlantic General Hospital. His mother and two of his brothers flew from Ireland to be by his hospital bed.

On Thursday night more than 200 people attended a vigil for him at his local Ballyhooly GAA club in Co Cork. Doctors in Maryland fought to keep him alive for four days but he died on Sunday.

Mr Leahy was a final year business student at Cork Institute of Technology and had been working in the US on a student visa. He was a popular figure in Cork GAA circles and captained Ballyhooly to its first junior B county championship title last year.
