Verizon in strike talks

VERIZON, the US phone company in which Vodafone has a 45 per cent stake, remained locked in talks with unions representing 78,000 workers last night to head off a strike. Verizon wants the power to lay off staff more easily after a US judge last week ruled thousands of staff were illegally made redundant last December.

Order to Swiss airline

THE Swiss Government has told Swiss International Air Lines to consider closer links with another airline, including a merger, to secure its future. The order comes amid reports that Lufthansa, the German carrier, is considering injecting up to SwFr300 million in the group in return for a key stake.

Iraq phone rules eased

Iraq’s Coalition Provisional Authority is to ease restrictions on companies bidding for three mobile phone licences. The CPA had said that firms in which a state owns more than 5 per cent could not bid in the auction. It has now raised the limit to 10 per cent.
