Casino groups await merger approval

Harrah’s Entertainment and Caesars Entertainment, the two major American casino operators, are still awaiting competition clearance over their planned merger. The US Federal Trade Commission is continuing its investigation and, despite the expiry of the antitrust waiting period, is not precluded from bringing an action challenging the transaction on competition grounds. The deal is also subject to approval by other regulators and by shareholders.

FSI takes $2m blow over court decision

FSI International Inc, the US supplier of technology and support services, said it will take a second-quarter charge of between $2.2 million (£1.2 million) and $2.4 million after a US appeals court upheld a judgment to a former shareholder. The California Court of Appeal upheld an award of damages to Eric Hsu, whose shares in Semiconductor Systems Inc were bought by other SSI investors before FSI’s acquisition of the company. No punitive damages were granted.
