Sticky wicket

CRICKET fans’ reluctance to buy expensive rigid packages to the World Cup in Barbados next spring has forced Caribbean hoteliers to offer more accessible deals.

Hotels are reviewing their plans to sell rooms for a minimum of a fortnight’s stay during the cricket World Cup from March 13 to April 28. You can now buy one-week packages such as Sporting Journeys’ £1,819pp deal, including a ticket for two of the “super eight” matches and two-star accommodation. Many two-week packages would have cost almost double.

Poor bookings have resulted in a charter flight being cancelled. Cricket travel outfit the Barmy Army secured 850 hotel rooms at a cost of £600,000 for the tournament and has sold barely 100.
