Steve Davies has been called up as cover for the third Investec Test against West Indies after Matt Prior picked up an eye infection.

Prior took part in practice today, and it is still hoped that he will be fit for his 55th Test cap against West Indies starting tomorrow.

Davies, who is playing for Surrey against Sussex at Horsham, has been told that he will be released back to his county tomorrow if he is not required in Birmingham. The wicketkeeper, 25, yas yet to make his Test debut but has played eight one-day internationals and five Twenty20 internationals.

Jonathan Bairstow, who can keep wicket, is already in the squad for the Edgbaston Test, but England appear to prefer to field him as a specialist batsman. The Yorkshire batsman has faced criticism over his ability against the short ball after he struggled against Kemar Roach in the first two Tests.
