Lawyers 599
Turnover £228 million

This City law firm — which traces its roots to the early 19th century — triggered waves in the wake of the Covid pandemic when it told staff who worked exclusively remotely that they would have to take a 20 per cent pay cut. It then landed in another vat of hot water when partners had to apologise for misleading several of the firm’s lawyers over the size of the annual bonus.

Regardless, the firm continues to be one of the most respected names in the Square Mile. As part of its work in transport, Stephenson Harwood advised Abellio on the management buyout of Abellio UK from the Dutch state-owned rail company, Nederlandse Spoorwegen.

Its work in life sciences included advising Bicycle Therapeutics on its recent strategic collaboration agreement with Novartis to discover and develop multiple targeted radioligand therapies in oncology. The firm also advised Horizon Capital on the launch of its Ukraine-focused Horizon Capital Growth Fund IV.

Commended for banking & finance; commercial dispute resolution; insolvency & restructuring; maritime; tax
