THE London Children’s Ballet (LCB) was set up in 1994 in response to a need for a children’s dance company open to all abilities. The impact of the performances was immediate, especially on those who would not normally have the opportunity to see ballet. This prompted LCB’s first outreach work, Ballet for £1. Two performances each year are set aside for charities and schools, and tickets cost £1 each. It is estimated that more than 10,000 people have seen their first ballet via the programme.
LCB2, the company of 18 performers which takes ballet to those unable to come to a theatre, is an extension of the outreach work. The dancers make a four-day tour of special needs schools and care homes in Greater London in the autumn, rounding off the season of outreach work.
