Lindemans Cawarra Classic Selection White, Australia, Somerfield, down £1 to £3.49 until September 12. A hotchpotch of Aussie grapes, but no matter, as this sweet, grassy, tropical fruit-stashed wine makes an inexpensive, easy-drinking, early autumn white, whose lively style will appeal to all.

Lindemans Cawarra Classic Selection Red, Australia, Somerfield, down £1 to £3.49 until September 12. The partner to the white above is this l3 per cent alcohol, fruity red that lives up to its name, with plenty of rich, briary, berry fruit, and a ripe, dusky finish that works best with food.

2005 Fief Guérin, Muscadet Sur Lie, Côtes de Grandlieu, France, Waitrose, £5.29. First time I have seen a screwcapped muscadet on sale here, and why not? This light, lemony, floral, silver medal-winning 2005, with lots of nutty, yeasty, sur lie flavours to the fore, is best enjoyed as young, fresh and zippy as possible.

2005 Villa Maria Private Bin Pinot Gris, East Coast, New Zealand, Booths, £6.99 (call 0800 1970066 for your nearest branch). Booths has a terrific wine range, and this tasty, pinot gris, with its rich, spicy, exotic fruit flavours and nutty, apricot-charged finish, is a spicy stir-fry star.

2005 Framingham Marlborough Classic Riesling, New Zealand, Caves de PyrÈne (014835 54750), £9.00; Wimbledon Wine (020-8540 9979), £9.99. A rare winning wine among the dozens of dreary cases that arrive unannounced, this zesty, off-dry, greengage-laden riesling gets my vote.

2004 Framingham Marlborough Pinot Noir, New Zealand, Caves de Pyrène, £11.05; Wimbledon Wine, £12.49. Framingham are more interested in winning whites than reds, but this delicious ripe, sweet, silky textured, strawberry and plum-charged 2004 shows that they can do both.
