Stage fright

Sir, It was disconcerting to read that Arnold “Gatemouth” Moore once walked on stage but was struck dumb, despite two attempts to sing, before he found himself unexpectedly delivering a gospel song (Obituary, June 10).

A few years ago, I sat down to play a piano composition at a memorial service. Despite repeated attempts, I could not remember the piece, and I then found myself — in a state of shock — returning to my girlfriend in the congregation.

Unexpectedly, she (and others) assured me that, after the initial fluffs, I had in fact played another composition — fluently. I have no memory of this apparent survival mechanism kicking in.

Yours faithfully,

GAVIN LITTAUR,

12 Rundell Crescent, NW4 3BP.
