Stability of Europe

Sir, Sir Michael Nairn, with his contention that it has been the EU that has prevented another European war (letter, Oct 14), omits to mention the institution that has really prevented such a war: Nato. Founded at the height of the Cold War, several years before even the initial union in Europe, Nato has not only prevented any such outbreak among its own members but defended Europe from external aggression. The EU, with its deeply divisive single currency and immigration policies, is now more likely to instigate than prevent any outbreak in Europe.
