Squire Patton Boggs

The Times

Lawyers 146
Turnover £773 million
Offices 45

This international colossus was created in 2014 by the merger of the legal practice Squire Sanders and the law firm-cum-political lobbyist Patton Boggs. It has offices in 20 countries.

In the past year the firm has advised Manchester Building Society (MBS) in a negligence claim against its former auditor Grant Thornton. This case dated back to 2013 and arose from negligent advice given by the auditing firm that led to MBS suffering a multimillion-pound loss. In June, the Supreme Court unanimously determined that the losses suffered by MBS were within the scope of Grant Thornton’s duty. The judgment has reformulated the legal test for the scope of duty of care owed by professional advisers to their clients.

The firm’s infrastructure practice advised Dubai Municipality on a $1.3 billion waste-to-energy project. Once complete, it will be one of the world’s largest such plants and will help the emirate to reduce landfill and create a more sustainable way of generating energy.
