Spotted wryneck

Sir, You report (some editions, August 20) that conservationists fear the wryneck may have disappeared from Britain as a breeding species. They say there were no sightings in the three years to 2003. My husband and I, with a group of about ten other ornithologists, watched a wryneck for at least half an hour near Kenfig Pool, South Wales on September 25, 2003. My husband has field notes to confirm this.

Yours faithfully,

JUDITH R. WALKER,
