Ian Hawkey (last week) said left-backs are always picked last in the playground. It may not be the most popular position, but it is this season’s ‘must-have’. It is a gift to be born left-footed because, as Hawkey said, only three out of 20 are born left-footed.

Richard Lewis wrote (last week) that Britain faced the possibility of not winning a single gold medal at the European athletics championships in Gothenburg, but we already had one — David Weir was an emphatic winner of the 1500m wheelchair race. It is sad that his achievement has not been lauded more, recognised as equal to any by an able-bodied athlete and counted in the medals table.

Every year the ‘shorts’ worn by female athletes cover less and less. How soon will it be before they are running in thongs? Is there a regulation to which they must adhere? It needs revising or implementing or both. Or perhaps I am just another grumpy old man.

Andy Murray still has a lot of growing up to do, but I take my hat off to him for the manner of his fightback against Robby Ginepri in Cincinnati when he was clearly out on his feet. It was a credit to him.
