Sport in Brief

Chestney is youngest pairs winner

Bowls: Jamie Chestney became the youngest winner of the National Express English men’s pairs title yesterday, when he skipped Ian Wynter, his Downham Ex-Servicemen’s clubmate, to a 19-16 victory over Rhys Lee and Luke Nunn in the final at Worthing. Chestney, who is 17, was outstanding throughout the six-match campaign and showed a maturity beyond his years.

The previous youngest winner of the national pairs title was Shaun Nutman, who was 20 years and three months old when he won in 1997.

Sailing: Bruno Peyron, the French yachtsman, and his crew on Orange II, the maxi-catamaran, yesterday failed by just half an hour in their bid to break the transatlantic record of four days, 17 hours and 28 minutes set by Steve Fossett and his team on PlayStation in October 2001. During the voyage from New York to the Lizard, Peyron set a 24-hour distance record of 703 miles.

No quarter given

Squash: The line-up for the quarter-finals of the men’s World Junior Team Championship in Islamabad, Pakistan, was completed yesterday. The four qualifying pool winners were joined by Kuwait, India and New Zealand, who scored 3-0 wins over Malaysia, Australia and Wales, respectively. Canada qualified by beating Mexico 2-1.
