Gibernau win cuts Rossi lead

Motorcycling: Sete Gibernau won the Czech Grand Prix in Brno yesterday to trim Valentino Rossi’s MotoGP World Championship lead to 17 points. The Spaniard started on pole position on his Telefonica Movistar Honda and fended off a challenge from Rossi to clinch his third victory of the season. Max Biaggi, who started the day tied on points with Gibernau, was third on his Camel Honda as he capitalised on errors by the Repsol Honda duo of Alex Barros and Nicky Hayden. Neil Hodgson, the World Superbike rider from Burnley, finished an impressive eleventh on his Ducati, despite a broken rib.

History women

Bowls: Molly Manning and Carol Grenfell made history as the first women to win what was the men’s national championships. Manning and Grenfell laid the foundations for Craig Doughty and Nick Grenfell, as the Bath team beat Kent 18-11 to win the All-England mixed fours title.

Springboks win

Rugby union: South Africa won the Tri-Nations for the first time since 1998, beating Australia 23-19 at the Absa Stadium in Durban. A second-half burst of 20 unanswered points proved enough for the Springboks despite a late rally from Australia.

Loeb takes lead

Motor rallying: Sebastien Loeb won Rally Germany yesterday, extending his lead in the World Championship to 29 points. Loeb is favourite to take the title after Petter Solberg, the champion, failed to finish.

Luckman loses

Shooting: David Luckman, of Britain, lost the Canadian Grand Aggregate by one point yesterday. Luckman, who had lead the event all week, was caught out by the vicious wind conditions in Ottawa.

Historic win

Rugby league: England Academy under-18s became the first team to beat Australia Schoolboys on home soil in Sydney. Their 33-24 victory on Saturday was sealed by a late try from David Doherty.
