Cayless signs for St Helens

Rugby league: Jason Cayless, the New Zealand prop, yesterday signed a four-year contract, starting next season, with St Helens, where he will join Daniel Anderson, the former Kiwi coach. The 25-year-old has played in three NRL Grand Finals with Sydney Roosters. Cayless’s move followed the signing of Iafeta Paleaaesina, 23, his New Zealand front-row colleague, by Wigan Warriors on a three-year deal from 2006.

Warrington Wolves have signed Michael Sullivan, the 25-year-old Cronulla Sharks hooker, on a two-year deal from 2006.

Athletics: Kelly Holmes has pulled out of Saturday’s BUPA Ireland City Games in Cork. The dual Olympic champion is still suffering from a niggling Achilles tendon problem that prevented her running in the recent European Cup First League match in Portugal.

Daunting draw

Golf: Joanne Morley, from Cheshire, has drawn Annika Sorenstam, the Swedish world No 1, in the first round of the inaugural $2 million (about £1.1 million) HSBC Women’s World Matchplay Championship at Hamilton Farm Golf Club in Gladstone, New Jersey, starting today.

Kent edge thriller

Bowls: Kent and Devon are on course for a repeat of last year’s inter-county final, though both struggled to reach the quarter-finals in beating Sussex and Wiltshire respectively. Kent edged home 116-115 only when Sandy Hazell’s rink broke a 115-115 deadlock on the last end.
