Sport in Brief

Bulls hope to inspire Meyers

Rugby league: Bradford Bulls are hoping to revitalise the career of Bradley Meyers, the Brisbane Broncos and Australia forward, who is joining the defending Tetley’s Super League champions on a three-year contract next season.

Meyers, 24, who has made 17 appearances for the Broncos this season, mostly coming off the bench, has failed to rediscover the form that made him the outstanding second-row forward in the NRL in 2001, when he featured in all three State of Origin matches for Queensland and played four internationals for Australia.

Harrison’s plan

Boxing: Scott Harrison will make the third defence of his second reign as WBO featherweight champion when he faces Samuel Kabede, of Ethiopia, at the Braehead Arena, Glasgow, on October 29. Harrison, 27, hopes that victory will set up a unification match against Injin Chi, the WBC champion, or even Erik Morales, the triple-weight world champion.

Cottey departs

Cricket: Sussex, the deposed county champions, have released Tony Cottey, the veteran batsman, after six years at Hove. The 38-year-old former Glamorgan player has averaged 41.27 in eight county championship games this season but, like Kevin Innes, the all-rounder, he will not be kept on by the club.

Canada too good

Ice hockey: Canada confirmed their claim to supremacy with a 3-2 victory over Finland in the final of the World Cup in Toronto, their fourth significant title in two years. Canada added the World Cup to their Olympic title from the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City and their 2003 and 2004 World Championships successes.
