Winning return for Henman
Tennis: Tim Henman battled back from a set down to beat Paul Goldstein, of the United States, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the second round of the Legg Mason Classic in Washington late on Wednesday night. The British No 1 meets Nikolay Davydenko, of Russia, whom he has never played before, in the next round.
Henman, seeded No 10, broke Goldstein in the first game of the final set and broke him again to take the match. “I’m pleased with the way I competed,” he said. “It’s my first hard-court match in a long time and my first competitive match in a month and I’m pleased with the way I came through. I just need to get matches under my belt and get used to the hard courts again.”

Polo: The semi-finals of the Goodwood Week medium-goal tournament for the Harrison Cup were played at Ambersham, West Sussex, yesterday. Los Locos beat Costa Careyes 7½-3 and will contest tomorrow’s final against Lambourne, who beat Bedlam 7-6.
Silver for Davies
Swimming: David Davies, who finished fourth in the 1,500 metres freestyle at the World Championships, came second in the 200 metres freestyle at the European Junior Championships in Glasgow last night. Davies, 18, shaved 0.6sec off his own Welsh record.
England expects
Lacrosse: England will meet Scotland in the final of the Women’s European Championship at Göttingen, Germany, tomorrow afternoon. England are strong favourites to retain their title, having won all their five games, with 70 goals for and only 11 against.

Hall in vain
Hockey: Danny Hall scored two second-half goals but they were not enough to prevent England losing 3-2 to Holland and drawing the series 1-1 in Amsterdam last night. England travel to play Germany in Krefeld tomorrow in the first of two internationals.
Davidson call-up
Rugby union: Joost van der Westhuizen is one of six players dropped by South Africa for the Tri-Nations match against Australia tomorrow. He is replaced by Craig Davidson. Joe van Niekerk, the flanker, plays his first international this year after injury problems.
Duarte dominant

Bowls: Caroline Duarte, who plays skip for England, will represent Surrey in next week’s EWBA National Championships in the singles, pairs and triples events. Duarte reached the county semi-finals in five events and created a record by winning three finals on the same day.
