Sport in Brief

Lawson hits high point of dire season

Rowing: Ian Lawson’s “season from hell”, which saw him dropped from the Great Britain double scull, hit new heights in the final Olympic qualifying regatta in Lucerne yesterday, when he finished third in the single sculls final to qualify.

Alex Beever, aiming to achieve last-minute qualification in the women’s single sculls, also made her final today, apparently with something to spare. Beever, who missed qualification by only one place in the 2003 World Championships, must also finish in the top three to make it to Athens.

Role for Forshaw

Rugby league: Mike Forshaw, 34, the Warrington Wolves forward, is to join the RFL in a new post of performance lifestyle adviser, on a part-time basis initially before he retires at the end of this season. He will work with players on issues such as education and employment.

Trio get workout

Hockey: The injury-hit trio of Craig Parnham, Martin Jones and Dave Mathews can test their fitness before the July 5 announcement of the Olympic squad, after being named in the Great Britain party to play five matches against Argentina this month.
