Brassey’s hard work pays off

Equestrianism: Louisa Brassey, 19, from Gloucestershire, won the International CIC Class at the UAE horse trials at Gatcombe yesterday, riding Plantaganet of Rushall, trained by Tina Hoy and Angel Tucker. Brassey spent a busy year building up a partnership with the horse and was rewarded with a good dressage.

Leslie Law, the Olympic gold medal-winner, did not compete yesterday because of an unlucky fall and bruising suffered on Saturday when in the lead on Diamond Hall Alice. Zara Phillips won the military novice class on the Princess Royal’s six-year-old, Blue Plaid.

Safin success

Tennis: Marat Safin, of Russia, ended a 22-month title drought with a 7-6, 7-5 victory over Mikhail Youzhny, his compatriot, in the final of the China Open in Beijing yesterday. The former world No 1 battled hard to claim his first championship triumph since he won in Paris in November 2002.
